David and Janet Shaw have watched the Peregrine Falcons at Chichester Cathedral since 2001 and followed their story from the beginning. First seen on the spire this time round in the mid nineteen Eighties ..... by a maths teacher at the Prebendal School......who's to say they were not there  five hundred years ago? They have been very successful nesting on the Cathedral and have fledged more than 70 chicks since the first fledging in 2001.

  • Did you know Peregrines are the fastest animal in the world.  They have been reported diving steeply (known as Stooping) at speeds of 398km/h (247mph)!
This site is owned by David and Janet Shaw and is run entirely in their own time and at their own expense for the benefit of all peregrine lovers.

From March to August it is possible to stand in the centre of Chichester around the Cathedral and watch these amazing birds.  We know that peregrines have been nesting on the Cathedral since 2001 and have now fledged over 70 birds.

Once the juveniles have fledged and they have been taught how to hunt and catch their food (they live exclusively on birds, catching them only on the wing) they will go their own way.  Sometimes a juvenile will hang around the parents hoping for a free meal, but by the time the next nesting season comes around they will usually have been chased off to find their own place in the world.  We do not know where all the offspring go but we know several live in Sussex and they have been seen in Brighton, Cambridge, Canterbury , Norwich,  Hull, Newbury, London ,Dorset and as far afield as Holland, France and Belgium.

The Cathedral has wonderful  views of the Peregrines from April to August both adult and later, juveniles, can be seen from the gardens and  grounds. The Cathedral, David Shaw Wildlife and the Sussex Ornithological Society have all joined forces to make sure there are live views of the nest on two Webcams for the coming 2023 season.Aiso it is with grateful thanks to the John Heaver Farming Partnership and Mick Evans for their invaluable support. The cameras is now live for the 2023 season and you can follow all the news on the Blog or Facebook.
